Building complex
Uniclass is a voluntary classification system for the construction industry that can be used for structuring project information, such as building information models (BIM). It was created in 1997 by the Construction Project Information committee (CPIC).
The Uniclass classifications, state that:
“In ISO 12006-2, Complexes include both infrastructure and facilities. Facilities – multi-entity construction projects that occupy a site – come in all sizes, from large ones such as housing estates and hospitals to small ones such as individual houses and grounds. Infrastructure projects serve and often straddle many sites.”
ISO 12006-2 is the international standard: Building construction -- Organization of information about construction works -- Part 2: Framework for classification.
The most recent version of Uniclass, Uniclass 2015, (maintained and updated by the NBS) suggests that a complex:
“…describes a project in overall terms. It can be a private house with garden, drive, garage and tool shed, or it can be a University campus with buildings for lecturing, administration, sport, halls of residence, etc. Rail networks and airports are also all examples of complexes.”
